Put Your House on a Diet
Goal 1: Skinny ClosetsOne of the most necessary diet tips for a healthy house is to cull clothes. Can you see space between the clothes in your closet?
If you love clothes, prepare yourself—slimming down a full-figured closet is an emotional process. Be brave and get started.
Keep Your Closet Slim
For clothes with emotional ties, such as family heirlooms, find an extra closet and store them. You can deal with them as time goes past. After my mom died, it took two years before I decided to barter a sequined shirt she’d had since I was a little girl.
I found a romantic vintage shop to consign my mom’s shirt. After it sold, I earned credit to spend in a store I adored.
Weaning What You Don’t Wear
Try the backward hanger drill. Turn all of the hangers backwards. When you wear something, turn the hanger in the right direction. After a while, you’ll have a visual of what you’re not wearing.
If something about an outfit just doesn’t feel right, trust your instinct, and pull those clothes out for the donation bin.
Goal 2: Clutter Snob
Don’t stress over the entire house, but begin purging knick-knacks you don’t need, books you don’t read, and unused kitchen paraphernalia. Keep in mind, weight loss takes time. Over time you’ll see and feel the difference in your home—just like losing body weight.
